About Us
A lab that works in the open
We study suicide prevention and build the information systems, tools, and partnerships that put what we learn into the hands of the people who need it.

A research and evaluation lab with one job
Getting effective suicide prevention into the schools, clinics, and communities that need it, and finding out whether it works once it is there. The lab was established in 2016 and most of what we do happens in partnership.
For ten years we have evaluated Oregon’s youth suicide prevention plan, supported twenty regional coalitions as they put it into practice, and evaluated twelve prevention programs and trainings statewide. In schools, we have run a three-year implementation pilot across ten districts and interviewed the people doing the work about what helps and what gets in the way.
The team spans suicide prevention, education, mental health, psychology, substance use, prevention science, and public health, along with implementation, improvement, and network science. It is co-directed by Jonathan Rochelle and John Seeley.
Whether it is working
State plans, coalitions, and programs: whether they are being delivered as designed, and what they change for the people they reach.
Making it fit
Working alongside schools and clinics to fit evidence-based practice into how they already run, and to keep it running after the launch energy is gone.
Making it usable
Turning findings into plain-language briefs, verified tools, and implementation checks that a busy team can use without reading the paper first.
We use inclusive, non-stigmatizing language throughout this site. People die by suicide; people experience suicidal thoughts.
